How Root Canals Save Teeth

Why is a root canal needed?

If a tooth gets infected, it can damage the blood vessels and nerves in the small canal at the center of your tooth. These nerves and blood vessels are called the pulp. The only way to prevent the infection from spreading is to remove the pulp, which is what a root canal does.

Fortunately, the pulp is only needed during the tooth’s formation. If you’re an adult, you no longer need it. So once Dr. Quagliata removes the pulp and seals your tooth, the infections is gone and your tooth is saved.

What happens during a root canal?

First, Dr. Quagliata examines your tooth and takes X-rays to see the extent of the infection. Then, she numbs the area with an anesthetic, so you won’t feel a thing. While many people associate root canals with pain, in reality the procedure is no more painful than getting a cavity filled. 

Next, she makes a small hole in the tooth and removes the pulp. Then she cleans the canal where the pulp resided. Finally, she seals your tooth. You will either get a crown or a permanent filling. Depending on your situation, you may need one or two appointments.

Your tooth may be sensitive in the days following your procedure, but you can treat this with over-the-counter pain relievers. 

What are the benefits of a root canal?

There are many reasons why a root canal is beneficial. A root canal can save your tooth. This can prevent you from having to pull your tooth. If you pull your tooth, you’d have to replace it with a dental implant or some other dental device. 

Dental implants are much more expensive than a root canal, not to mention the time you’d have to spend going through the process. Furthermore, nothing tops the look and feel of a real tooth.

Root canals are more than 95% successful, and they often preserve the tooth for a lifetime. And once the root canal has healed, you can use your tooth just like you always did, only without the infection and pain it caused.
