Tips for Taking Care of Your Invisalign Trays

May 31, 2019

Are you tired of hiding crooked teeth in your smile but don’t want to get bulky, metal braces? Invisalign® clear plastic aligners may be a great option for you!

More than six million people have used Invisalign clear aligners to straighten their teeth and regain their sense of self-esteem and confidence. Dr. Indra Quagliata and our team at Smylique Dentistry are experts at using Invisalign to get these kinds of results. We work hard to help our patients in Rochester, New York, achieve the best smiles possible.

Thinking about getting Invisalign? Here are a few tips to consider about taking care of your Invisalign trays.

Rinse and soak

Invisalign trays can be breeding grounds for bacteria, especially the kind that cause your breath to have a not-so-fresh smell. You should rinse your trays every time you take them out and put them back in — this will clear away the bacteria, plaque, and any other particles.

You can also soak them a few times a week using the Invisalign cleaning crystals or even denture cleaner.

Avoid food, drink, and hot water while wearing your trays

The only thing you should eat or drink while wearing your aligners is water. Any food or colored beverages may stain or discolor your aligners and cause them to smell.

Hot water or hot beverages can also warp the plastic trays, which can in turn delay your treatment. If you do accidentally expose your aligners to hot water, schedule an appointment with your orthodontist right away to have them checked.

Brush and floss

Your Invisalign trays can easily trap food or bacteria on your teeth, so be sure you brush and floss your teeth after eating and before putting the trays back on. This will ensure you have clean and healthy teeth throughout your Invisalign treatment. It will help your trays stay in better shape as well.

Keep your old trays

You will likely go through several sets of aligners as your teeth become straighter. You might feel like sticking your old trays in the trash when you get a new set, but hang on to them. You may need them if you lose your current set, and it’s always a good idea to have an extra pair, especially when you’re traveling.

Clean carefully

You may be tempted to scrub your trays vigorously to clean them, but resist the temptation — you may damage the aligners with too much scrubbing. Clean them gently with a clear, antibacterial soap, and this will be sufficient. You should also make sure your trays are covered when they’re not in your mouth, to keep bacteria and other contaminants away.
